The next several days were spent recovering and watching for more attacks. We saw far fewer demons out in the wastes, which was nice, and there were no signs of the Sinvarians.

We checked their corpses and didn't find much, nothing to tell us who they were or what precisely had been their goal. Had they simply been intending to destroy the tower? Or had it been a diversion of some sort?

Lance wanted to head back to Paldane lands, but we had no horses. Any sort of foot travel was going to be extremely perilous, indeed.

I talked to the Guardians about the possibility of repeating the "patch job" I had done on the crystal. Perhaps if I did it again, or multiple more times, it would work out and further give us more breathing room.

Walking around the base of the Tower, while the cracks were still there, they were no longer spewing mana, which was a good sign.

"I am sorry, Jäger," one of them told me during our assorted meetings. "I wish it were that easy, but simply packing a crack with more and more mud will not solve the problem. It will fix the problem for a time, but eventually, the mud must be removed and filled with concrete, or stone, or something more sturdy."

I didn't like that answer, but I didn't have any way to argue, either.

Almost a full week came, when Master Koch woke us early and led us to the front entry.

"A rider approaches," he smiled warmly. "I believe they bear Paldane colors. Perhaps they will bring good news!"

I didn't think it was likely, but I did like the old master's enthusiasm. He certainly seemed to be enjoying himself with all of us there, that was for sure.

I could only imagine simply being stuck there by himself, lonely and likely bored, just waiting for demons to attack or for the Tower to explode underneath him. In any case, we all walked out into that early morning, just in time to see a rider racing up onto the ridge line.

They skidded to a stop just in front of us, sparks flying from the hooves of the beast. A page boy swung down.

"I have a letter from Gunther Paldane!"

We all crowded into the sitting room to read it. I had to wave everyone else back, particularly Reinhardt, and quickly slit the letter open.

As I started to read, my knees began to get weak. I sighed.

"Dear Jäger,

I hope this letter finds you well. First off, I dearly hope that Lance made it to the Tower with you. I gather it wasn't the plan for Aerin to come back the way she did, but she's been quite welcome here and has likely already prevented several attempts on my life.

She has nothing but praise for you and has been a welcome addition around the fortress. She and Ysabel have been getting along quite well.
